A Brief Introduction to This Historic Town

Dungog has a long and proud past. You will be excited to depart your Dugong hotel to walk streets that resonate with history. Appreciate the structures that the town has maintained and restored to reflect the passing years.

  • The name of the town has its roots in the Gringai Aboriginal language. Gringai people lived there for many years before settlers arrived.

  • Some of the architectural treasures feature blue plaques with information on the story behind the building. You will find that the past merges seamlessly with the present.

  • Early settlers farmed crops such as wheat, corn, and tobacco. Since then, farming has concentrated on dairy products and timber.

A Guesthouse With a History and an Enthralling Story

The Royal Hotel Dungog has an interesting story. The original structure, built in 1850, was a one-storey timber building. When builders replaced this structure with a Georgian-style brick building, it became a two-storey structure. Workers demolished and rebuilt this building in 1912. Nine years later, in March 1921, Tooth & Company bought the hotel. When a fire destroyed the building in the 1930s, and it needed a thorough rebuilding, it provided an ideal opportunity to modernise. The current Art Deco two-storey building opened in 1939.
